About Abydos and the Temple of Seti I

Abydos was considered one of the most sacred cities in ancient Egypt, believed to be the burial place of Osiris, the god of the afterlife, resurrection, and eternal justice. As such, it was a major pilgrimage site for ancient Egyptians, who believed that being buried near Osiris would grant them a better afterlife.

The Temple of Seti I is renowned for its:

– Exquisite reliefs and carvings that are among the finest in all of Egypt—many still retain their original color.

– Seven sanctuaries, each dedicated to a major deity: Ptah, Re-Horakhty, Amun-Ra, Osiris, Isis, Horus, and Seti I himself.

– The Abydos King List, a chronological list of pharaohs from Menes to Seti I, essential for Egyptologists studying royal lineage.

– Osireion, a symbolic tomb of Osiris located behind the main temple, built with megalithic stones and surrounded by water—believed to represent the primeval waters of creation.

Who is Osiris?

Osiris was one of the most important deities in Egyptian mythology. He was the god of the dead, the ruler of the underworld, and a symbol of resurrection and eternal life. According to legend, he was murdered by his brother Set, and resurrected by his wife Isis. His cult centered in Abydos made the city a vital religious destination.
